Metalsmith

As a Metalsmith you will be a valued member of a team, working not only in a workshop, but also out in the field on domestic exercises, deployments and humanitarian operations. You will join the Corps of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME).

Metalsmiths operate manual metal arc welding machines (MMAW), metal inert gas (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG), oxygen-acetylene welding and cutting equipment. As well as operating and maintaining tools and equipment of their trade.

You'll have the opportunity to grow your technical knowledge and skills through the completion of specialist courses. This includes performing specialist welding tasks on armoured vehicles, structural components and bridging equipment which may comprise ferrous armour, structural steel, quench and tempered steel, homogenous armour and specialist aluminium alloys (7000 series).

As a Metalsmith, your duties include, but aren't limited to:

joining, deforming and treating metals and composite materials (fibre-reinforced plastics and graphite-reinforced plastics). fabricating, repairing, modifying and reclaiming equipment and components. performing specialist welding tasks including repairs and modifications to ferrous armour, structural steel, quench and tempered steels and homogenous armour; and, specialist aluminium welding (7000 series). performing safety and technical inspections on specialist equipment and structural components. general soldiering duties, such as manning defensive positions, patrolling, traffic control, camouflaging of vehicles and field equipment, and navigation.
