The Opportunity

We have a unique opportunity for a Solicitor to join our growing Environment, Planning, and Communities team (EP&C) in Sydney.

In this role, you will work closely with Partner Peter Briggs. Peter is a Chambers Band 1 ranked lawyer with a stellar track record in advising clients on large-scale and complex environment and planning issues.

Our EP&C team is part of our new and dynamic Projects, Energy and Infrastructure practice group, which has a core focus on energy transition work across a number of sectors.

You will be involved in assisting clients in obtaining planning and environmental approvals for significant energy, resource, infrastructure, and urban development initiatives. Additionally, you will contribute to providing strategic advice on land access and compulsory acquisition, planning law, pollution and contamination, heritage, biodiversity and native title issues. The role involves front end advisory as well as related environment and planning disputes.

Key responsibilities:

Assist in the preparation of legal documents, including environment and planning advice and contracts. Conduct legal research and analysis to support case strategies and client advice. Collaborate with senior team members in advising clients on a range of climate change, ESG, environment, planning, heritage and native title matters. Assist in the management of and response to environmental crisis, regulatory investigations and environmental prosecutions and litigation. Assist clients in obtaining all planning and environmental approvals for major energy, resource, infrastructure, and urban development projects. Running compulsory acquisition, environment, planning and other disputes in the Land and Environment Court of NSW and other courts.

You will benefit from exceptional learning opportunities working on 'first-in-the-market' projects and with clients who are at the forefront of the energy transition, and successfully managing ESG risks and opportunities.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Admission to practice in Australia or New Zealand and between 1.5 to 4 years of demonstrated legal experience. Demonstrated interest in environment and planning law through relevant work experience, coursework or internships. A strong academic record, coupled with excellent legal skills and a practical mindset. Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.
