About the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society (CILIS)
The Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society (CILIS), located in the Melbourne Law School, was established in 2013.


The Centre aims to facilitate and support research on Indonesian law, governance and legal culture at the University of Melbourne with a particular focus on the state legal system, Islamic legal traditions and their relationships to Indonesian society.

About the Role

Launched in July 2015, Indonesia at Melbourne is a platform for analysis and commentary on contemporary Indonesia and the only solely Indonesia-focused academic blog in Australia.

The blog is based at the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society (CILIS) and is a joint initiative of Melbourne Law School, the Asia Institute in the Faculty of Arts, and the University of Melbourne's Indonesia Forum.


The Blog Editor's primary responsibilities will involve commissioning, editing, writing and uploading content for the blog, uploading the _Talking Indonesia_ podcast, as well as managing the blog's social media accounts.

They will also be expected to regularly liaise with academics working on Indonesia at the University of Melbourne, including through attendance at relevant public lectures and events.

The Editor will be required to monitor traffic to the blog and provide regular feedback and analytical reports.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the efficient operation of the blog, ensuring that deadlines are met.
  • Monitor Indonesian social and political developments.
  • Identify contributors, commission articles, translate articles, generate, copy edit and upload content for the blog, including crossposting _Talking Indonesia_ episodes.

About You

You will have strong Indonesian language skills, including an ability to monitor developments in Indonesian language media (traditional and social media).

You will be self-motivated with a good sense of judgement and the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.

Your highly developed organisational and project management skills, including the ability to set priorities, manage timelines and complete tasks within agreed timeframes will be essential to succeed in this role.


You will also have:

  • A completed master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as politics, social science, or law.
  • Excellent English language editing skills, including a demonstrated ability to convey academic concepts in language appropriate for a general audience.
  • Advanced understanding of Indonesian social and political issues.
