Safe Steps is the sole 24/7 center in Victoria dedicated to responding to family violence, serving as the primary contact point for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence across the state. They offer various services such as information and referral, crisis response, family violence risk assessment, safety planning, Webchat, and access to supported crisis accommodation. The organization's mission is to ensure safety, support, and respect for all victim-survivors of domestic and family violence, following a trauma-informed approach guided by evidence-based practices. They provide services to all victim-survivors, with a focus on the specific needs of women and children, recognizing the gendered nature of domestic and family violence.
Job DescriptionThe role of the Family Violence Court and Social Support Worker involves supporting victim-survivors interacting with family law courts as part of the state-wide Family Violence service. Responsibilities include:
- Assisting families affected by family violence to navigate between state and federal court systems
- Conducting risk assessments, safety planning, and advocating for referrals and services
- Collaborating with family law courts, court staff, and Safe Steps response team to ensure safety for service users and their children impacted by family violence
- Working with stakeholders to facilitate the resolution of matters in a safe, effective, and efficient manner
Key Responsibilities include:
- Conducting risk and needs assessments
- Engaging in safety planning
- Assessing social support needs of families
- Advocating for referrals and additional services
- Considering children's needs in risk assessment and making appropriate referrals to child protection services
- Liaising with the family court to ensure the implementation of safety plans during court proceedings
- Providing information, non-legal advocacy, and support to families throughout the court process
- Referring families to relevant social services and coordinating their use
- Communicating with the court to obtain necessary documentation on behalf of families
- Advocating for families with various organizations such as housing services, Centrelink, victim support services, and police when necessary
- Facilitating transitions between different jurisdictions related to family law, family violence, and child protection
Skills and Experience:
- Meeting equivalency standards outlined in Recommendation 209
- Holding tertiary qualifications in a community/social service profession or related field
- Having a deep understanding of family violence dynamics, community resources, and the family law system
- Demonstrating proficiency in trauma-informed practices and support delivery
- Applying feminist practices to address gendered violence against women and children
- Recognizing cultural, linguistic, and other barriers that may marginalize women and children in crisis situations
- Possessing excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills
- Being able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting
- Managing stress effectively, maintaining composure, and engaging with clients in crisis situations
- Showcasing self-motivation and adaptability to changing workloads and tasks
- Holding a current Victorian Drivers Licence
