The Swinburne University of Technology Indigenous Engagement team are seeking an Elder in Residence to join their team.


The Elder in Residence will work to support the unique wisdom, experience, and cultural heritage central to the University delivering better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

The Elder in Residence will work closely with the PVC Indigenous Engagement and Indigenous Program & Project Manager to deliver key outcomes in and across all programs and projects.


Linked to Swinburne's progressing Reconciliation Action Plan, the Elder in Residence will promote a stronger and more cohesive society, by serving as a catalyst for intergenerational understanding, cultural preservation, and community well-being.


About You

To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures. Additionally, an understanding of the relevant issues and impacts with in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, demonstrating negotiation and consultation skills relevant to relevant to the delivery of education services
  • Experience in providing mentoring and support services for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in post compulsory education and training
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and responsibility, work under a broad level of supervision and perform in a consistently professional manner, including maintaining confidentiality

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in an education/training setting.
  • A relevant degree or diploma or demonstrated extensive experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in an education/training setting
