Job No.: 666578

Location: Clayton campus

Employment Type: Full-time

Duration: fixed-term appointment

Remuneration: $35,013 pro rata tax-exempt stipend

About the Scholarship

Monash Faculty of Education is offering a PhD scholarship for full-time research at postgraduate level. The award is available to an applicant intending to undertake a PhD with a focus on teachers' engagements with artificial intelligence (AI) in secondary schools.

We are looking for ideas for PhD projects that resonate with our new three-year Discovery research project funded by the Australian Research Council on AI and teachers.

The 'Supporting teachers and teaching in the age of AI' project aims to explore the growing integration of AI tools into secondary schools, and identify ways to support teachers to engage with AI technologies in their classrooms.

The main part of the project (led by Neil Selwyn, Michael Phillips, Jo Blannin and Carlo Perrotta) aims to work with schools and teachers to develop a sense of the full range of AI technologies that are coming into schools, and how teachers can be supported to develop good understandings of and effective engagement with AI.

We are looking for PhD projects that can complement and extend the scope of the main research project – adding an additional empirical and/or theoretical component to our planned fieldwork activities in three case study schools located in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

Possible topics might include, but are not limited to:

The changing nature of teacher knowledge, expertise, authority and/or autonomy in light of AI-augmented education The changing nature of pedagogy in AI-mediated educational environments The changing nature of educational work and labour with/alongside AI technologies The role of AI technologies in educational governance, organisation and management AI technologies and issues of surveillance/ privacy in classroom contexts Issues of ethics, trust, equity and/or justice implicit in teacher engagements with AI technologies The political economy of AI and education Sociotechnical imaginaries of AI and teachers/teaching Anticipating possible futures of AI and teachers/teaching

We would welcome proposals on any topic and context that you feel is worth pursuing – with a preference for projects with clear potential for interdisciplinary approaches.

The awardees will be determined by a panel in a merit-based selection process. The successful candidate will complete their PhD under the supervision of Professor Neil Selwyn, as well as at least one other academic from the Faculty of Education at Monash University, depending on your topic.
