Northern Beaches Hospital is a fully licensed private hospital, providing care to public and private consumers from an outstanding facility with a large range of quality services provided by exceptional nurses, doctors and staff.


Mental Health Peer Workers use their personal journey to support consumers by providing individual consultations, education and group interventions aimed at facilitating recovery principles of hope, choice, self-determination and social connectedness.


As a Mental Health Peer Worker, you will also provide education to consumers, carers and clinical staff, and act as a representative providing input on policy, systems, committees, projects and research.


To be successful in this role, you will also possess the following skills and experience:

  • Relevant qualification (Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work) or equivalent work experience
  • Evidence of personal experience as a consumer of mental health services, and the ability to utilise your lived experience to support others with their own mental health recovery journey, whilst drawing on evidencebased strategies to maintain wellness
  • An understanding of and commitment to consumer led recovery principles
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement effective individual and group peer interventions, including supportive counselling, using specific recovery experience to share experiential knowledge, skills and strategies for living with mental illness, provision of information, and acting as a support person in the health system
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and actively contribute to clinical care planning processes in a team setting
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with a range of key stakeholders, GPs, nongovernment organisations, inpatient and community Mental Health Drug & Alcohol teams, consumers and carers
  • Demonstrated clear written and verbal communication and negotiation skills including information technology skills
  • A current License to drive in NSW with the ability to travel occasionally for work purposes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and understanding of consumer participation and partnership, Person Centred Care, Trauma Informed Care, Consumer Led Recovery, Rights and Responsibilities for Consumers, NSW Mental Health Act 2007 and Amendments and National Mental Health Standards (2010)
