Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland.

The department encompasses the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, Rural Fire Service Queensland and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

Purpose of role


The Public Information and Warnings unit provides strategic and operational response oversight of the public information capability to ensure operational planning and readiness at the state, regional and local levels.

The team works in conjunction with other teams across the department and external stakeholders, responsible for elements of public information to ensure Queensland communities receive timely, accurate and relevant information during incidents and disasters to ensure the safety of the community and effective incident management.

Reporting to the Director, State Operations, you will be responsible for the strategic planning and management of the public information function on behalf of the department.

You will be required to lead and manage a team of officers responsible for the strategic and operational planning, quality assurance, development of systems, tools and processes, and implementation and delivery of training, including timely incident-based information to help communities make informed decisions, take protective action and reduce potential impacts and consequences of a hazard.

Key requirements

Highly desirable requirementsMinimum C Class Driver's Licence (non-restricted).Experience and/or qualifications in communications roles within a complex and challenging environment.
Special requirementsParticipate in a 24 hour on-call roster and travel intrastate or interstate, as necessary.
Deployment at short notice in response to QFES operations during major incidents, emergencies and disasters if required.
Your key accountabilities


Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:Lead and manage the public information function including personnel, process and technology through implementation of continuous improvement philosophies and quality assurance in a complex and rapidly changing environment.

Lead and manage the development and review of policies and procedures, and provide technical input into training development and implementation to ensure a consistent approach to deliver information and services.

Contribute to national and international emergency and communication sector research and development relating to information and warnings.

Provide strategic input and advice into the ongoing development of the broader incident management function to ensure alignment with the evolution of contemporary incident management approaches.

Prepare and review complex communication content, briefs, reports, submissions and correspondence, relating to information and warnings in accordance with departmental requirements.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to contribute to effective incident management and public information.

Represent QFES on relevant internal and external committees and working groups at the national, state and departmental level in support of effective public information and warnings.

Develop human and other resources to ensure effective and efficient delivery of critical public information during a range of incidents, emergencies and disasters, including community warnings.
