We have a unique opportunity for experienced, innovative and motivated critical care nurses with recent leadership skills and capability, to be part of the Critical Care Outreach ICU Liaison Nurse team at Western Health.

This position requires a dynamic nurse with superior clinical and interpersonal skills who is able to work within a multidisciplinary team setting in an advanced practice role.


At Western Health the Critical Care Outreach ICU Liaison Nurse Consultant (ICU LNC) facilitates a proactive approach of identifying patients deemed at risk of deterioration.

This approach raises awareness and visualisation of the service while providing critical care expertise to 'at risk' patients, The ICU LNC must demonstrate a high level of knowledge and skills facilitating learning in the clinical environment and promote the goal of delivering safe Patient care.

The WH Critical Care Outreach ICU Liaison Nurse team also provide consultation and clinical support for medical, nursing and allied health staff involved in the management of patients with complex care needs, and who are at risk of clinical deterioration by supporting their management during the acute phase of their physiological instability, or as a bridge to transfer to a critical care area by:

  • Assisting with the assessment of patients ready for discharge from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and supporting the care of patients on the ward who have been recently discharged from, or are waiting transfer to ICU by liaising with medical, nursing and allied health teams regarding the specific care requirements of these patients, and
  • Participation as key members of MET & Code Blue response in conjunction with medical teams to support the process of escalation of care.
This position will have shifts allocated across Footscray and Sunshine Hospital, including the Joan Kirner Women's and Children's building

Essential criteria

  • The successful applicant(s) will possess:
  • Hold current Nursing Registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency (AHPRA).
  • Possess a post graduate qualification in critical care nursing
  • ICU.
  • Minimum 3 years Critical Care / Intensive Care Nursing Experience with 5 years post registration experience.
  • Have excellent knowledge of best practice in intensive care nursing care.
  • Be passionate about providing patient centred care.
  • Have demonstrated leadership experience and skills in the clinical setting.
  • Be highly accountable and display a supportive and engaging style.
  • Demonstrates advance communication and problem solving skills
