About the role

As the Heavy rail plant operator, you are integral to the success of V/Line's Asset Management – Maintenance Group.

Whilst operating heavy machinery and trucks designed for railway construction and maintenance, this position also contributes to the physical tasks required to lay down, align, repair, and maintain the tracks, ensuring safe and efficient train operations.

Key Accountabilities include:

  • Participate in the replacement or renewal of track work and crossing work materials i.e., sleepers, rail, ballast, fastenings etc.
  • Safely operate and take full responsibility for the truck and plant in the heavy category which will include organising the maintenance and servicing of the plant.
  • Carry out Manual labouring tasks for the renewal and/or maintenance work related to the rail infrastructure when not operating plant.
  • This role requires availability for both day and night shifts, which may include Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays, as part of a regular pattern or roster cycle. Hours of work are:
    • Day shift runs from 7 AM to 5:30 PM.
    • Night shift operates from 8 PM to 6 AM.

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Hold a certificate II Rail Infrastructure or be willing to obtain within the first 6 months of employment through V/Lines Registered training organisation.
  • Hold a valid Heavy Combination (HC) Truck License with experience in loading and unloading plant.
  • Excavator, backhoe and loader experience with the required competencies.
  • Willingness to undertake Manual labor when not operating plant and driving the truck.
  • The ability to work away from home for the 10 days on, as well as the willingness to work both day and Night shifts.
