  • Role Overview:

We're seeking an experienced engineering leader for the Core Services group in Melbourne, Australia. As the Director of Engineering, you will lead teams pivotal to our Account and Team Domains, with scrum teams in Melbourne, Australia, and Pune, India.

The ideal candidate will have a background in building technical teams, expanding management teams, and driving their success, while fostering consensus and alignment across the organization. They should have a proven track record as the helm of dynamic, passionate teams focused on coding and building scalable backend services while spearheading significant new initiatives propelling Zendesk forward.

  • Key Responsibilities:

Lead a team of managers and engineers developing products and features within the Account and Team Domains at Zendesk. The Account Domain serves as the central hub for all account, plan, and product data, while the Team Domain manages permissions for Zendesk customer agents, admins, and end users. Our services are built in Scala, Ruby on Rails, and operated on AWS.

Cultivate an organizational atmosphere of inclusivity, trust, and high performance while emphasizing feedback and core principles.

Collaborate with leaders across Engineering, IT, Marketing, Product, and Program Management globally from various Zendesk sites to align on strategies and drive the delivery of reliable products.

Collaborate with existing management to enhance delivery, grow the team sustainably, and ensure team satisfaction.

Communicate progress and key decisions widely within the organization.

Guide and support managers and engineers through development plans, offering regular feedback.

Engage closely with local Melbourne leadership as needed, given the seniority of this role at the Melbourne office.

  • Qualifications:

You are presently or have previously held a Director of Engineering position or equivalent, with experience in managing managers. The role demands an experienced leader.

With a background as a software engineer, you can effectively lead highly technical teams. While not expected to code daily, comprehensive understanding of the team's technical work is essential.

Demonstrated history of establishing high-performing, self-reliant teams through talent acquisition and internal nurturing.

Experienced, composed, and at ease.

Proficiency in Large-scale cloud architecture, particularly in a SaaS framework.

Skilled in overseeing and collaborating with globally dispersed engineering teams. With Zendesk being a worldwide entity, your direct teams may be in APAC, while partner teams could be in the US or EU.
