What you'll do

As an Artillery Operator, you serve as the crucial link in the Artillery chain, providing essential artillery fire support in combat operations.

Working closely with a team, your main responsibility is to operate the M777 155mm Howitzer in various challenging environments. You'll engage in regular field exercises and training, while also ensuring the equipment is well-maintained when not in use.

In this dynamic role, each day presents new challenges, where you will:

  • Set up, apply firing data to aim, load, and fire the potent M777 155mm Howitzer
  • Safely handle, prepare and store a variety of artillery ammunition
  • Maintain and service artillery equipment for deployment
  • Operate cross-country vehicles (if assigned for additional driver training)
  • Perform general soldiering tasks including defensive positions, patrolling, and navigation

This position entails physical strength, involving heavy lifting and precise firing execution. However, it offers a unique form of fitness that goes beyond traditional gym training.

Training and Progression

No prior experience is necessary to join this role. You will undergo comprehensive military training to equip you for all facets of the job.

Through your Initial Employment Training (IET), you will transform into a skilled Artillery Operator. Your initial posting will likely be within one of the Artillery Regiments.

Continuous training will enhance your expertise in handling the M777 Howitzer, opening avenues for career advancement. You can diversify your skills, mastering all gun positions and potentially qualifying as a heavy vehicle driver. Furthermore, you will refine your teamwork, leadership, and communication abilities.
