Consistent with our values we are seeking values based Consumer Specialist Worker to join our highly skilled Mental Health team.


The Consumer Specialist Worker (CSW) works collaboratively with all staff as a member of the mental health Multidisciplinary Team, under the general direction of the Nurse Unit Manager and the supervision of the Senior Peer Consultant of the health unit, to provide non-clinical recovery support services to inpatients.


The CSW utilises their expertise from their Lived Experience of mental health recovery to support persons living with a mental health condition and care providers to understand the concept of recovery, in order to achieve the best outcomes for individuals.

Peer Lived Experience means a personal experience of a mental health condition and recovery, and accessing mental health service support (public or private).

Lived Expertise comprises the unique experiential knowledge, wisdom and insight into the perspective of a person who has experienced mental distress, trauma and injustice, and living the recovery journey.

Recovery acknowledges that all people have opportunities to make choices and live meaningful, satisfying, purposeful lives, and be valued members of their communities.

Recovery outcomes are personal and unique for each individual and go beyond an exclusive health focus to include an emphasis on social inclusion and quality of life.


The CSW by utilising their 'Lived Experience' will:

  • Provide individual support to consumers by sharing elements of their own lived experience of recovery, which may include skills and strategies that have been helpful for them.
  • Plan and evaluate educational groups for patients, with the aim of promoting an understanding of recovery, psychological wellbeing and selfmanagement strategies, in collaboration with Mental Health Service staff.
  • Serve as a positive role model for recovery and support person who walks alongside others on their recovery journeys, and assist consumers in navigating the mental health service and to be active in their own treatment planning.
  • Take a lead role in ensuring that the perspectives, experiences and considerations of consumers are taken into account in the provision of care for a person receiving services.


Holding a Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work or Cert IV Mental Health Work - Non-Clinical, is highly desirable.
