Your role as Injury Manager - Specialist Complex Claims


The People Branch provides operational, tactical, and strategic human resources support to the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) to create a safe, resilient and just DCJ where people can realise their potential.

The Injury Manager - Specialist Complex Claims, works within the high performing Injury Management Team in People Branch.

The Injury Manager - Specialist Complex Claims role plays an integral part in the timely and efficient operation of the Injury Management function, supporting the Injury Management Officers to deliver strategies for complex claims and managing the performance of the workers compensation legal team.


The role reports to the Manager, Injury Management - Operations providing support for programs and initiatives and leading process improvements which impact the whole of DCJ.


What you'll do


As part of the Injury Management Operations Team, you will work across the injury management, Business Partner People teams and with the business to develop strategies to intervene on complex claims.

Complex claims includes where there are a range of human resource issues overlapping, including but not limited to, performance issues, conduct, workplace issues and/or a risk of a high severity injury.


This role will coach and work with injury managers and line managers to implement interventions on annual performance adjustment impacting workers compensation claim.

There is an emphasis on interventions that will support recover at work options within the first 3-6 months of injury.

The intent is to develop strategies to reduce risk and intervene early to reduce the common injury types across DCJ, including psychological claims.

This role requires an innovative approach to generate evidence-based designs that support a human centred injury management operating model.

This role manages a team if Injury Management Advisor - Legal Claims.

What we're looking for
For the Injury Manager - Specialist Complex Claims role, we're searching for someone who can showcase:

  • Their ability to assist and support injury managers and their teams with complex cases, including participating in case reviews and devising innovative approaches.
  • For complex claims, attending claims reviews and case conferences with the injury manager and insurer claims manager.
  • Conducting internal reviews with injury management teams to assist in flagging high risk claims and supporting a strategic action plan for individual cases.
  • Have a good operating knowledge of the Workers Compensation legal framework
  • Be technically sound around the NSW Workers Compensation legislation
  • In conjunction with the injury managers, liaise with the business to support and enable recovery at work
  • Working across the Safety and Wellbeing team to ensure consistency and efficiency in meeting our strategic reviews, including other injury management projects and initiatives, as required.
