About the role:


The Underwriter performs day to day operational underwriting functions within a State Underwriting team through the underwriting and negotiating of individual policy renewals, new business and midterm policy adjustments in accordance with the Delegated Underwriting Authority (DUA).

The Underwriter in collaboration with Distribution colleagues will grow and develop key intermediary relationships and deliver exceptional customer service.

The role collaborates with other teams, removes any blockages to performance, escalates issues and proactively looks for ways to simplify and improve the underwriting process.


More specifically, you will:

Underwriting:

  • Underwrite new and renewal business within the scope of individual Delegated Underwriting Authority to achieve the strategic and financial goals of the Commercial Portfolio strategy.
  • Conduct renewal reviews to ensure business is reunderwritten in alignment with current underwriting, selection and pricing guidelines and implement corrective or remedial actions when appropriate.
  • Underwrite new business in alignment with current underwriting, selection and pricing guidelines.
  • Monitor ongoing policy performance to identify opportunities for remedial or corrective underwriting

Customer:

  • Working with State Intermediary teams to enhance and maintain strong intermediary relationships and engagement
  • Adopt a customer focus in the delivery of internal/external service level agreements and workflow standards
  • Understand brokers interests and tactics to negotiate the best outcome in terms and conditions for renewals and new business
  • Monitor market, competition and intermediaries to identify opportunities for product or customer performance uplift

Team:

  • Actively collaborate across the team, the State and the broader business to support the achievement of strategic goals and action plans.
  • An active member of the Underwriting faculty and participate in its learning events and activities
  • Use the Underwriting Capability Guide to identify development opportunities to grow and develop underwriting capability and authority

Risk:

  • Takes ownership for managing nonunderwriting risk and acknowledging that overall management of risk is part of role
  • Understands the value of Suncorp's risk appetite and how this relates to the role
  • Ensures that the right risks are identified and effectively responded to when they arise
  • Operate within Delegated Underwriting Authority and the Commercial Quality Assurance framework

Product:

  • Understanding of relevant Insurance products, industry, market environment, reinsurance structures and customer segment
  • Underwrites in accordance with Risk Appetite, Delegated Underwriting Authority (DUA), Underwriting Guidelines and Business Licence
  • Use technical product knowledge to set terms and conditions and determines their acceptability in comparison to risk appetite for each customer
  • Adheres to DUA and escalates with recommendations to higher DUA holder when appropriate
  • Understanding and utilisation of underwriting tools, resources, processes and guidelines

About You:

  • Relevant degree in Business, Commerce, Insurance or related field
  • Desired
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the Insurance market
  • Demonstrated ability to influence in the commercial Broker and Adviser insurance market to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes
