Currently the post is undertaken 8am-4pm on Tuesday and Wednesdays.

  • Job DescriptionThe paediatric orthoptist is responsible for the provision of independent planning, coordination, and delivery of high level, evidencebased, effective, and efficient Orthoptic services for children accessing Royal Far West. The paediatric orthoptist aims to ensure that all children accessing our Paediatric Developmental Program have a baseline vision screening to allow early diagnosis and intervention for any identified visual/ocular deficits. The paediatric orthoptist is required to facilitate referrals to an ophthalmologist; either externally or to RFW Ophthalmology clinics with Dr James Smith
  • Ophthalmologist. Regular consultation and liaison with RFW consultant Ophthalmologist and provide prescribed treatments to ensure the delivery of highquality care to children with any identified visual or ocular concerns. This encompasses ensuring timely, appropriate, and flexible access, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and discharge planning in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Desired Skills and ExperienceEssential Criteria
  • Must hold as a minimum a bachelor or post graduate degree in Orthoptics which provides eligibility for registration with the Australian Orthoptic Board.
  • Demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge, skill, and significant clinical experience in the provision of paediatric orthoptics and paediatric development, including working with children with intellectual disability, Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, ODD and children with significant behavioural difficulties.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including negotiation, advocacy, conflict resolution, and an ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders and families from culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated expertise in trauma informed practice and working with vulnerable children.
  • High level computer skills and ability to use a range of electronic systems, including electronic health records.

  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development, reflective practice, and learning.
  • Demonstrated skills in leading quality improvement, service development and evaluation initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, lead, complete and evaluate quality improvement initiatives and/or research focused on patient/client outcomes.
  • Demonstrated high level organisational and time management skills in an environment of competing clinical/administrative demands.


Desirable Criteria
  • Comprehensive understanding of developmental vulnerability and the health challenges of families living in rural and remote Australia
  • Experience in clinical research, teaching or training
  • Experience facilitating groups or health promotion activities
