The role of a Security Architect

  • is to provide security architecture leadership, including planning and governance, to enable the effective planning, implementation and use of digital technology.
  • works closely with the business at a senior level to facilitate Architecture options analysis and decisions to ensure solutions are designed to meet the security needs, project and program requirements as aligned to the Digital Strategy.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop and establish a Security Maturity Model for the Emergency Management Sector.
  • Lead the design and implementation of security architecture standards, patterns and guidelines.
  • Assess architecture and solution designs for compliance to security patterns and standards.
  • Owning, capturing and documenting the current security architecture where there are gaps, driving the development of target security architecture, and developing roadmaps for the security domain.
  • Identify and assess security risks, recommend, and document risk treatment actions, in respect of ICT services, solution designs and technology architectures.
  • Collaborate with senior management on information security management, progress on risk treatment activities, security incidents and policy exceptions.
  • Communicate security architecture to all relevant stakeholders, and collaborate with them in ensuring that these remain relevant.
  • Engage with operations and delivery resources to provide security related guidance during project planning and execution, for example with product selection decisions.
  • Ensure that planning and execution of projects and programs is aligned with enterprise architecture and EM Strategy.
  • Participate in the relevant tender evaluation process to ensure security requirements are met.
  • Ensure that architectural artefacts repositories are actively maintained and up-to-date.

In addition to anticipating possible security threats and identifying areas of weakness in a network system, a Security Architect must respond promptly and effectively to possible breaches of security.

  • Reviewing current system security measures and recommending and implementing enhancements.
  • Conducting regular system tests and ensuring continuous monitoring of security controls.
  • Ensuring all personnel have access to the IT system limited by need and role.
  • Assisting in the establishment of disaster recovery procedures and conducting breach of security drills.
  • Promptly responding to all security incidents and providing thorough post-event analyses.

Key selection criteria

Technical Expertise

  • Seven+ (7) years of security architectural experience, preferably at a senior level.
  • Ten+ (10) years of ICT experience.
  • Extensive experience in Information Security and/or Cyber Security Architecture and/or Design role with a focus on security, performance and reliability.
  • Experience in the establishment of Security Maturity Models and/or Frameworks.
  • Experience in the security architecture aspects of cloud-based business solutions, encompassing public (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google), private and hybrid models.
  • Experience in the security architecture aspects of integration solutions, including iPaaS, API Gateways, ETL, ESB and related technologies (e.g., REST, JSON, etc.) is desirable.
  • Experience in multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, identity management or related technologies is desirable.
  • Knowledgeable about the software development lifecycle and solution delivery for cloud-based systems.
  • Solid understanding of threat and risk concepts and the ability to articulate both as part of solution design.
  • Solid understanding of security protocols, cryptography, authentication, authorisation and security.
  • Solid working knowledge of current IT risk landscape.
  • Experience in developing and implementing security risk assessment models. Performing assessment of solution designs against these models, including security impact assessments.
  • Good working knowledge of at least one (1) Cyber Security Frameworks such as ASD Essential 8, PSPF, ASD - ISM, COBIT, CIS Controls, ISO/IEC 27001 and/or NIST.
  • Knowledgeable in current ICT cyber security practises and policies within the Australian Government Framework.
  • Ability to interact with a broad cross-section of personnel to explain and enforce security measures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as business acumen and a commercial outlook.
