  • Anglo American Steelmaking Coal**Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blastfurnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

Job Description:

  • Reporting to the General Manager
  • Safety Operations, the Safety Manager
  • Systems and Learning is responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation and management of best practice strategies to support Steelmaking Coal's vision in Safety Investigations, Learning and Systems.


This is a full-time permanent role based in our Brisbane Corporate Office with flexible working arrangements available and site travel required.


Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a plan for standardisation of relevant safety systems and processes across Steelmaking Coal, ensuring collaboration and input from key stakeholders from site and technical Subject Matter Experts.
  • Drive improvements that support simplification, efficiency and effectiveness of systems and processes at both corporate and operational level.
  • Continual compliance and effectiveness review of corporate and operational Safety and Health Management Systems.
  • Champion Human Factors thinking in system design and investigation outputs.
  • Establish and maintain a peer review process for incident investigation quality and action close out effectiveness, ensuring feedback and coaching is provided to drive continual improvement in learning.
  • Facilitate incident investigations as assigned by the GM Safety Operations.
  • Continually monitor trends in safety performance, using both lead and lag indicators, and support intervention planning in response to trends.
  • Ensure systems provide for accurate and efficient capture, analysis and reporting of Safety and Health data.
  • Oversee that weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting is completed on time and accurately.
  • Champion the implementation of the SHE Way in Steelmaking Coal, including leading the corporate HSE committee and management review.
  • Validate corporate SHMS documentation is maintained in alignment with regulatory and Anglo American requirements.
  • Maintain the Emergency Response Plan and Crisis Management Plan for the corporate office, ensuring all duty card holders are trained and understand the requirements of their role.

Qualifications:

  • To be successful in this role, the following will be highly regarded:
  • Tertiary Qualification in an appropriate discipline, preferably with higher level studies.
  • Formal qualification in facilitation of safety investigations will be highly regarded.
  • Qualifications relating to international systems accreditation (ISO14001/ ISO45001) will be highly regarded.
  • Extensive experience in a similar/same role at a mining operation.
  • Knowledge of Queensland Coal Mining legislation.
  • Strong track record with engaging with stakeholders across multiple sites and workstreams.
  • Ability to establish and lead a team to safely deliver work and foster a safetyfirst attitude and culture.
