About the position
Council' Operations Department is looking for a Section Leader - Horticulture who will be responsible for the following

  • To assist the Coordinator Parks and Vegetation to plan and deliver a high quality of horticultural presentation of council managed Parks and Recreation Reserves, Botanic Gardens and Arboretums, Road Reserves, Central Activities Area, Shopping Precincts and Community Facilities.
  • To provide operational input and advice to the Coordinator for the development of strategies, policies, procedures and design for the delivery and management of Council's Park and Open spaces
  • To plan, lead and manage Horticulture Teams within the Operations Department
This is a full time role working 38 hours per week.

About you


The successful incumbent will have a tertiary qualification in Horticulture or similar field (preferably a Diploma or Degree or equivalent level), combined with substantial experience in the maintenance of open and civil spaces.


The role is responsible for leading a large team of individuals and as such, we are looking for someone with strong leadership skills and the capacity to drive cultural change across the teams within horticulture whilst supporting and mentoring team leaders.


Crucial to the role is experience in managing and negotiating contracts in accordance with Council's contract management plan, risk management plan and organisational policies and procedures.

The successful incumbent will possess strong time management skills coupled with the ability to manage multiple projects at one time.


Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to prepare project/program reports, correspondence, and presentations to a range of forums is a must, as is sound financial management experience including budget forecasting.


Whilst not essential to the role, experience in the maintenance of native vegetation and curating/maintaining Botanic Gardens and Arboretums would be advantageous.
