The team working on the ARC project, comprising experts in music, design, and sociology from Griffith and RMIT universities, is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join them.
The selected candidate will be stationed at Griffith University's South Bank campus in Brisbane, Australia, collaborating with the Creative Arts Research Institute, Queensland Conservatorium, and Queensland College of Art and Design.
Job Description
We are seeking applications for a scholarship-supported doctoral study focusing on exploring DIY electronic musical practices in regional and remote Australia. The ideal candidate is a hands-on electronic/digital musician with a keen interest in developing and evaluating maker techniques and support materials. Proposed research topics may include:
- Enhancing digital music creation in regional Australia
- Utilizing digital fabrication techniques in instrument design
- Leveraging open-source hardware and software for DIY sonic arts
- Exploring innovative applications of music technology
- Fostering community engagement in DIY digital music creation
While the PhD project allows candidates the freedom to develop their own ideas, the successful applicant will be part of an Australian Research Council Discovery Project focusing on digital music creation in regional Australia. They will be mentored by two of the project's Chief Investigators, Professor Andrew Brown and Associate Professor John Ferguson.
Qualifications
Applicants for the research scholarship at Griffith University should have a strong academic background and a passion for electronic music, physical computing, microcontrollers, 3D printing, laser cutting, or other related creative technologies. They should be eager to conduct research in the specified areas of interest.
- Expressions of interest are welcomed from both local and international candidates.
- Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree with honors equivalent to a 'first class' distinction, a Masters degree (AQF Level 9) with a substantial research component, or meet Griffith University's equivalent academic standards as per the HDR Scholarship Procedure.
Please note:
International applicants must meet the English Language Proficiency requirements before applying. They should demonstrate proficiency through:
- IELTS - Minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no band score below 6.0
- TOEFL - Minimum score of 575 on the paper-based test, including 5.0 on the TWE, or a score of 79 on the internet-based test with no sub-score below 19
Additional Information
About the scholarship
The 2024 Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship provides an annual stipend of $33,480 (indexed) for up to three years of full-time study. Refer to the GUPRS Conditions of Award for more details.
Successful international applicants will also receive a Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship covering tuition fees for three years. See the GUIPRS Conditions of Award for further information.
