Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Westpac Group Full time
  • Sydney location
  • Permanent, full time
  • Hybrid working environment

How will I help?

We have a fantastic opportunity for a lawyer to join an experienced and collegiate corporate legal team within one of Australia's major financial institutions.

Westpac Banking Corporation is a public listed company. The Westpac Group is a complex business which operates in several domestic and offshore jurisdictions.

The key functions that the team assists with are:

  • M&A, restructures, strategic investments and divestments;
  • Corporate Advisory;
  • Corporate Governance;
  • Group Policy; and
  • Disclosure/External reporting.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide high quality advice to the Westpac Group that is accurate, timely, cost effective and commercial.
  • Ensure appropriate transaction governance is in place and maintained;
  • Demonstrate excellent time and matter management.
  • Support the Westpac Group's risk strategy by influencing, negotiating and consulting with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Instruct and manage the delivery of any required external legal and other advice in a cost effective and efficient manner.
  • Keep up to date with legislation, risk management frameworks and procedures in order to provide quality advice to internal stakeholders.
  • Active engagement with other members of the Group Legal team and with the wider legal function to deliver high-quality outcomes.

What's in it for me?

You'll play a significant part of the future of a business that has been around for 200 years. Our purpose is of creating better futures together. So, we'll back you in the development of your career, internal career prospects, and flexible working. You'll also keep learning to grow, backed by a fantastic team of people with a can-do, supportive structure.

Whatever shape your family takes, we offer generous paid and unpaid parental leave for your nominated primary and support carers. This includes leave to organise adoptions, surrogacy, and foster care arrangements. And we continue to pay your super contributions while you take all the time you need to get your new family settled.

What do I need?

We want to hear from lawyers with at least 5 years' experience who can manage their own transactions and are confident in engaging with business partners and stakeholders at all levels. Your training could have been gained either as an in-house counsel with a major organisation, or in a leading law firm.

  • You will have significant experience in M&A or transactional legal work, ideally with some corporate advisory background
  • You will have commercial acumen and excellent communication skills;
  • Want to work in a close knit and collegiate team and develop strong relationships with internal business partners
  • Have the ability to provide proactive support to key internal stakeholders and have a desire to do a range of legal and associated non-legal work.

What is it like to work there?

We aim to provide one big, supportive team to help us achieve our purpose of creating better futures together. As well as competitive remuneration and a great culture, joining the Westpac family means you will get some of the best banking, wealth and insurance benefits in the market.

We back our employees by helping them work towards industry-recognised qualifications, using online learning, training modules and career planning tools for you to grow with us. We will even pay you to do volunteer or community work.
