Tafe Queensland is the training contractor for the Pacific Maritime Training Services program (PMTS) on behalf of the Australian Department of Defence.

The PMTS program equips crew from 12 Pacific Islands and Timor Leste with the knowledge, skills, and aptitude necessary to safely crew, manage and maintain a Guardian Class Patrol Boat.

Your Opportunity
As the Teacher - Maritime (Technical) you will be responsible for:

  • Outcome focused vocational education and training (VET) programs.
  • Linking with industry, Pacific Island Country representatives, Commonwealth stakeholders, other TAFE and VET providers.
  • Maintaining currency with industry practices, workplace delivery and contemporary teaching methodologies and philosophies.
  • Working in an environment of change and continuous improvement.
This position reports to the Pacific Maritime Training Services Business Manager
This is a Temporary Full-Time opportunity, to June 2024 unless otherwise determined.

The position will be based primarily at Cairns, however you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Display teaching competence
  • Lead and manage the teaching and learning process for classroom, distance, and webbased students involved in the Pacific Marine Training Services program.
  • Utilise flexible, blended and distributed learning techniques, options and products to meet the changing needs of students undertaking training courses under the Pacific Maritime Training Services program.
  • Develop effective working relationships with students, client groups and staff by participating in team meetings, industry reference groups, student events and Regional forums.
  • Ensure that Pacific Marine Training Services program students develop and practice accepted safety procedures in a learning environment.
  • Participate in appropriate staff development programs to develop and maintain currency of personal and professional skills, knowledge and attitudes.
  • Undertake general administration duties including monitoring of student attendance and progression, facilitating access to educational support and providing effective feedback and advice
  • Develop and implement assessment processes and tools that meet occupational skills standards (i.e. endorsed components from National Training Packages) and participating in validation and moderation activities relating to assessment processes and practices.
  • Actively engage with industry, business and the community.
  • Contribute to the success of transformation and cultural change through promoting and modelling the established values of Safety First, Working Together, Focussing on Our Customer, Showing Initiative and Taking Responsibility.
How you will be assessed
The ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:

  • Demonstrated capacity for best practice in the management of teaching and learning activities (including delivery, assessment and evaluation) including the development of flexible/innovative learning options, products and solutions for the Pacific Marine Training Services program.
  • Demonstrated capacity for leadership, selfmanagement and ability to work effectively as a Pacific Marine Training Services team member, with the capacity to accept, promote and manage change while utilizing welldeveloped interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate commitment to selfdevelopment with the focus on qualifications/skills update and contemporary industry practices.
  • Possess sound knowledge of safe, equitable and antidiscriminatory work practices and demonstrated ability to be flexible, responsive and deliver quality client services
Mandatory Qualifications/Requirements
a. Vocational competencies at least to the level being delivered and assessed;

  • At a minimum, holds a Certificate IV
