The Australian National Maritime Museum is seeking an experienced and dynamic Shipwright to join our Fleet team in this full-time ongoing position.

Under limited supervision plan, carry out and document the conservation, preservation and maintenance of vessels in the Collection. Provide specialised supervision of contractors, apprentices and volunteers. Perform the duties of ship keeper and crew aboard the Museum's vessels.

Takes all reasonable care that their actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of others and complies with all health and safety policies and procedures.


High level overview of accountabilities:

  • Identify problems and/or issues with Fleet vessels and develop the necessary works to resolve them.
  • Ensure each vessel is maintained in accordance with the Vessel Management Plans (VMPs) and safety equipment mounted on each vessel so that they are ready to be used for sailing and other visitor activities.
  • Provide specialised supervision of contractors and apprentices, and develop close working relationships in supporting and training of Fleet Volunteers and the management of their workflow.
  • Support WHS systems and protocols for fleet vessels and carry out urgent maintenance to ensure the vessels are available for sail or visitation.
  • Coordinate fleet vessels maintenance and repair during refits and dockings in the dockyard in accordance with vessel management plans and approved procedures. Monitor the progress of the works and manage priorities.
  • Advise and assist in responding to specialised requests from both internal and external stakeholders in matters concerning the care of historic watercraft.
  • Assist in the set up for special events as required ensuring that the vessels are open and ready to the public and participate in demonstrations of shipwright activities and crafts for public events.
  • Develop documentation including papers, reports, presentations, proposals, policies and plans for a variety of audiences, as required.
  • Advise and assist with management and execution of visitor programs on floating vessel as required.
  • Provide assistance as required to achieve and maintain AMSA and NSW Maritime survey on vessels in survey and to an agreed condition at all times.
  • Perform the duties of crew aboard fleet vessels.
  • Perform the duties of Ship Keeper as required.

Selection Criteria:

Essential

  • Technical qualifications in boatbuilding or a recognised marinerelated trade.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise contractors, apprentices, and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of the maritime regulatory framework for the safe operation of commercial vessels.
  • Demonstrate the ability to read ships drawing and systems that may be required during the course of duty.
  • Understand the environmental issues that exist onboard an operating vessel and precautions to be taken (MARPOL).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the operation of squarerigged or traditional sailing craft coupled with relevant sailing experience and qualifications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Willingness to work weekends and public holidays as required.

Desirable

  • Work experience in a customer service environment with knowledge and understanding of the operation and presentation of a major public attraction.
  • Familiarity with the history of shipbuilding in Australia.
