La Trobe Communication Clinic is a teaching, learning and research clinic that provides speech pathology services to the community on the University campus at Bundoora. The clinic is student-led providing progressive scaffolding of student skills in speech pathology from novice to entry level students, interlinking with academic subjects, and enabling students to confidently attend external placements.

Clinicians will work with groups of 6 students and 3 clients in a placement block. Clinicians will work in a highly supportive and structured program that will provide high quality speech pathology services to preschool children presenting with speech and language delay/disorder within a community health setting. The clinic provides high quality clinical education for undergraduate and/or postgraduate speech pathology students. Orientation to the LCC and the student program will be provided prior to the commencement of placement.

These positions are casual with generous hours allocated. See below for the different placement dates. Clinicians will be required to attend the LCC (Bundoora) weekly on the specified clinic day and support students' preparation for clinic remotely between sessions.

Duties:

  • Providing quality clinical services to preschool children with speech and language delay/disorders in accordance with 'best practice' guidelines as outlined by Speech Pathology Australia.
  • Providing clinical teaching and supervision to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Hons) and Master of Speech Pathology courses.
  • Monitoring, evaluating and reporting on students' development of clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Identifying students who would benefit from additional assistance during clinical sessions, acting as a mentor to maximise student progression in skills and knowledge.
  • Developing an understanding of the policies and procedures of the University related to the La Trobe Communication Clinic. This includes working within relevant policy, procedural and planning frameworks including:
    • Following the guidelines for supervision as outlined in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Hons) Practice Education Handbook and Master of Speech Pathology Practice Education Handbook
    • Participating in relevant Discipline of Speech Pathology and LCC planning and review processes
    • Participating in continuous quality improvement processes
    • Adhering to relevant funding agencies' implementation and reporting requirements
  • Performing allocated administrative functions effectively and efficiently.
  • Facilitating research opportunities for students and staff where appropriate.
  • Undertaking other duties commensurate with the classification and scope of the position as required.

Skills/Experience:

  • A recognised qualification in speech pathology, ideally with additional relevant post graduate qualifications (in order to meet TEQSA Higher Education Framework Standards*) or extensive relevant experience, or an equivalent alternate combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience.
  • Eligibility for membership of Speech Pathology Australia
  • Clinical experience working with children presenting with speech and language delay/disorder
  • Experience in, and demonstrated commitment to, quality student education.
  • High level organisational skills with the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, initiate and follow-up actions, all with minimal or no supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially the capacity to work collaboratively and cooperatively in small teams.
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development in the area of child speech and language disorders and practice education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Hours:

Master of Speech Pathology

  • Novice level placement
  • Student expectations and responsibilities increase in line with attaining competency.
  • Required availability: 1 day/week (7 hours) on-site + remote work (approx. 3.5 hours/week)
  • Duration – 9 weeks
  • Must be available: Tuesday or Thursday July to September (Block 1) or September to November (Block 2)

Bachelor of Speech Pathology

  • Intermediate level placement
  • Student expectations and responsibilities increase in line with attaining competency.
  • Required availability: 1 day/week (7 hours) on-site + remote work (approx. 3.5 hours/week)
  • Duration – 11 weeks
  • Must be available: Wednesday or Friday August to October (Semester 2)

Rate of Pay: $80.40 per hour
