The Mental Health Commission of NSW (MHC) is seeking a Senior Advisor Communications & Engagement to join the Communications & Engagement team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, dynamic group committed to developing and executing high-quality strategies and activities that promote and enhance the MHC brand, showcase its work and facilitate conversations between MHC and its stakeholders.

The Commission is based in the Sydney CBD and working flexibly within hybrid workplace guidelines.

Role of the Mental Health Commission of NSW

The MHC is an independent body with a broad remit – to monitor, review and improve the NSW mental health system and the mental health and wellbeing of the people of NSW. That includes research, advocacy, education, evaluation and the development of a state-wide strategic plan for mental health services and support.

The Commission works across government and closely with community organisations, academics, advocacy groups, service provides and people with lived experience, building on their expertise and skills to influence and design changes and improvements to mental health services in NSW.

Primary Purpose of the Role

The Senior Advisor, Communications & Engagement, project manages the development and implementation of stakeholder engagement and communication strategies in accordance with strategic plans, consultative processes and reporting requirements. They will monitor and identify media issues and opportunities, drive internal and external communication initiatives eg media and consultation, events, publications, and online communication channels.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement end-to-end external engagement and communication strategies to facilitate connection with key stakeholders and target populations.
  • Deliver pro-active and responsive media relations identifying and leveraging opportunities to build and maintain visibility and ensure a positive reputation for the Commission.
  • Project manage communications and engagement activities to assist with the achievement of the MHC's business plan and objectives.
  • Identify, research and write content for the full range of communication channels used by the Commission.
  • Support the delivery of quality communications, communication strategies and communication collateral for the MHC.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with media, government and external stakeholders.
  • Achieving cut through for MHC projects and messages in a competitive and cluttered environment.
  • Identifying and integrating new technologies and new opportunities in a rapidly changing media environment.
  • Experience in public affairs or journalism and/or relevant tertiary qualifications.
  • Established relationships with key media as well as strong media relations and issues management experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to critically assess situations and manage politically sensitive and complex issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement multiple strategic communication and engagement plans.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team, producing quality work and demonstrating a strong attention to detail.
