About the role:


Operating within a team of Workplace Health and Safety professionals, the WH&S Consultant role is to provide, specialist advice and expertise on WH&S issues, trends and best practices to Brisbane Infrastructure.


The purpose of this role is to deliver products and services which supports BI to maintain legal compliance, implement contemporary safety practices and improve WHS outcomes.


  • Lead and role model exceptional customer focus by making sure the needs and aspirations of customers are understood and that they are addressed with honesty, fairness, sensitivity and dignity even when the outcome is unable to fully meet the customer expectations.
  • Work in partnership with your team leader to agreed performance standards and mutual expectations. Give and receive regular feedback to enable performance to be improved and take personal responsibility for optimising your potential within Council.
  • Monitor and report on Brisbane Infrastructure's workplace health and safety performance and develop strategic or operational solutions to issues.
  • Lead development, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of policies, processes, strategies and systems related to workplace health and safety.
  • Conduct research and provide uptodate knowledge of workplace health and safety trends, best practices and issues.
  • Deliver specialist workplace health and safety services, knowledge and advice to customers.
  • Manage the development and implementation of projects to improve workplace health and safety outcomes.
  • Provide coaching support to enhance the skills and knowledge of staff within Brisbane Infrastructure and ensure relevant and emerging issues, trends and changes in policy and legislation is provided.
  • Work in a team context, promote personal and team accountability and support the learning and development of other employees.
  • Model the corporate consistencies and policies, particularly in the area of Living in Brisbane 2026 and the values and behaviours.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Brisbane Infrastructure Management Systems and undertake all work in accordance with the Zero Harm policies and procedures.

About the individual:

  • Ability to contribute to team direction, give and receive feedback and achieve agreed performance standards in order to contribute to a culture of performance excellence.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of workplace health and safety legislation, issues, trends and best practices and experience and their implications on the business environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide authoritative, professional, and strategic WH&S advice to senior and line management and other key stakeholders in relation to WH&S issues with a strong client outcome focus.
  • Demonstrated communication, coaching, training, consultation and negotiation skills to work effectively with all stakeholders, including external groups and agencies, dealing with sensitive information in an appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams engaged in complex, strategic organisational change processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse complex situations and provide appropriate strategic advice and assistance to senior and line management, particularly in relation to workplace health and safety issues and trends and related legislation.
  • Ability to develop positive collaborative working relationships with clients, peers and team members through high level communication and negotiation skills.
  • Tertiary Qualification in OHS or related discipline and relevant work experience.
  • Experience in complex organisations and management systems.
  • C class drivers license is a mandatory requirement for this role
