Job Description Reporting to the Manager, Policy and Advocacy, the Policy Officer will be responsible for contributing to the development and analysis of nursing, health and aged care system policies, position papers, projects and submissions aligned with the Australian College of Nursing (ACN) strategic intent.

The role will also contribute to developing policies to address emerging issues and trends relevant to nursing and the health system.

Team members are expected to draw upon subject matter experts to develop relevant policy responses to these issues.

The role will be responsible for undertaking research, identifying and analysing emerging policy trends and issues and providing authoritative advice to senior management through the Policy Manager.

Selection Criteria
Qualifications and experience
There are no mandatory qualifications required for this role.
However,an appropriate tertiary qualification is desirable.
Tertiary qualifications in nursing and/or other health-related fields and social or political sciences are essential.
Tertiary qualifications in nursing are not essential but will be looked upon favourably.

Experience in formulating and analysing health and/or clinical policy for either government, a health service provider or an organisation associated with health or nursing.

Technical expertise
Understandingin providing sound evidence-based policy advice in a health-related environment.
Demonstrated high-level computer skills and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software.
Knowledge and Skills

Policy Skills– Understanding of policy development, research and review, formulation, and implementation based on good organisational knowledge and understanding of current health issues, resulting in an ability to address strategic, environmental and nursing issues effectively.

Written Communication– Ability to prepare draft project briefs, draft reports, draft discussion papers, policy options, draft recommendations on issues, and provide strong support for a preferred position or action for the Policy and Advocacy Manager.

Verbal Communication– Ability to build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders

Problem-solving– Ability to develop and evaluate draft solutions considering likely business impacts, developing contingency plansand ensuring stakeholders are actively engaged in the problem-solving process.

Conceptual & Analytical Thinking– Developing and using conceptual thinking and sound analytical approaches to support decision-making in the work area.

Flexibility- Adapts approaches and work to changes in the environment and effectively meets new challenges.
Able to work flexibly and recognise a change in team priorities
Initiative and Accountability- Takes responsibility for actions, proactively implements their work plan, and addresses issues.
Collaborative -Collaborate with team members and internal/external stakeholders while remaining accountable for actions.
