At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), our mission is to conduct innovative health and medical research that greatly enhances people's quality of life.

SAHMRI resides on Kaurna land, the traditional custodians of Adelaide and its surroundings. We collaborate with traditional custodians in South Australia, Australia, and globally. The Coolamon Navigator (Project Manager) role involves providing high-level research support for the Aboriginal Families and Communities Health Research Alliance (ACRA) by working closely with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in South Australia and potentially beyond.

The primary focus involves implementing and evaluating support and care packages for pregnant Aboriginal mothers, babies, and their support system. This role is based at SAHMRI Women and Kids, operating across multiple maternity hospital sites including Women's and Children's Hospital, Lyell McEwin Hospital, and Flinders Medical Centre, with possible travel between hospital and SAHMRI sites.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing research support to the ICARE project and other research initiatives within ACRA
  • Facilitating the utilization of the Coolamon Wraparound Program for Aboriginal mothers through tailored strategies to meet their needs as identified in the Baby Coming You Ready program or other enrollment pathways
  • Establishing and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders and service providers related to the Coolamon Wraparound Care model
  • Negotiating with clinical and managerial staff to implement the Coolamon program effectively in South Australian sites
  • Supervising SA Coolamon Research Assistants to ensure the program's smooth operation
  • Maintaining strong relationships with study participants, the research team, medical staff, and external stakeholders in both hospital and community settings
  • Supporting mentorship, training, and professional development of various research personnel
  • Prioritizing health, safety, and welfare at work in alignment with SAHMRI's Vision, Mission, Values, and Code of Conduct Policy

About You

  • Experience in working with Aboriginal communities and research projects
  • Demonstrating empathy, positivity, and a proactive approach
  • Proficiency in computer applications, research tools, and databases
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work collaboratively while meeting deadlines
  • Effective communication with health professionals and academic staff
  • Commitment to reconciliation and partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Special Requirements

  • Possible out-of-hours work
  • DCSI Working with Children and Police Checks may be necessary
  • Primary location at SAHMRI Women and Kids with travel to other SAHMRI sites as directed
  • Compliance with immunization requirements
