About the Role:

Are you an organised and diligent customer service professional with shift work experience in the hospitality, education, or administration sectors? Deakin Residential Services (DRS) are looking to expand their casual staff pool.

As a Reception Officer, you will be required to work across a variety of shifts on a 24/7 roster at the Waurn Ponds and Waterfront campuses.

The main shifts are 7.00am to 3.00pm, 3.00pm to 11.00pm and 11.00pm to 7.00am with the majority of shifts on weekends and nights.

You will provide reception, administration and resident support for Deakin Residential Services. This includes high-quality customer service to the current and future residents, families, University staff and external contractors.

The position acts as a point of contact for residents and provides information as part of the community life of the residential complex, or referral to an appropriate service.

It also assists with the organisation and implementation of academic, social, cultural and sporting events/activities that facilitate a living and learning community.


This position reports to the Reception Coordinator, Geelong and will have strong relationships with other members of the reception team, whilst aiding other areas of DRS.

Regular and ongoing formal and informal contact and interaction with residents (students) is expected. Regular contact with Deakin Security is expected in order to facilitate incident responses.

Regular liaison with other areas of the University will be required in order to assist with the provision of reception services, program support and administrative tasks.


The position does not have direct budget accountability or management of any staff however works autonomously during out of hours shifts acting as a first response to incidents.

Only applicants available to work across all shift patterns and days will be considered.

To be successful, you'll have:

  • Proven successful ability to deliver highquality customer service with experience in shift work.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently and effectively within a team environment.
  • High level administrative skills including the ability to plan, time manage and complete tasks.
  • High verbal and written communication skills, including need for confidentiality.
  • High interpersonal skills including the ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds, and particularly young people.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • High level computer literacy with knowledge of the Microsoft suite and ability to learn new packages

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Assist with general administration and reception duties which will include maintaining the resident housing management system.
  • First point of contact for any afterhours student interaction to assist in a professional manner or to refer them to the relevant personnel or information source.
  • Assist with general maintenance issues as required.
  • Be equipped to professional respond to any emergency situations, this may include acting as the Chief Fire Warden or First Aid Officer.
  • Coordinate bookings and delivery of services for short term accommodation customers.
  • Support other Deakin Residential Services areas as required.
  • Any other duties as directed, commensurate with the scope and classification of the position.

Additional Comments:

  • Work outside normal business hours may be required (nights, weekends, early mornings).
  • A Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate is mandatory for this position.
