It is located in the Faculty of Science and is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching.

It offers world class undergraduate psychology degrees, as well as postgraduate professional Masters training in Clinical and Forensic Psychology, an online Graduate Diploma program, and a PhD research program with over 120 students.

40 academic staff conduct experimental research in many areas of Psychology, including behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, perception, learning, memory and cognition, as well as health, social, developmental, clinical and forensic psychology.

The Research Assistant plays a key role in supporting research projects as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers in the area of brain health and cognitive resilience.


About the role

$82k - $93k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading

  • Fixed Term months (or to December 31st, 2024)
  • Part time (14 hours)
The role reports to Professor Kaarin Anstey and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provision of practical and efficient research support to stakeholders, supporting the conduct of research that contributes to a better understanding of brain health.
  • Assisting with recruitment and onboarding of research participants. This will include administration of questionnaires and cognitive assessments.
  • Monitor research protocols, provide problem solving and resolution to any evolving problems related to design, implementation and analysis.
  • Liaise with organisations, data custodians, stakeholders and collaborators and actively participate in meetings and discussions as required.
  • Coordinate, plan and complete daytoday research activities within the framework of agreed project timelines and responsibilities and under the supervision of the research lead.
  • Accompany participants to the UNSW MRI facility at Prince of Wales Hospital and assist with participants attending SEALS (South Eastern Area Laboratory Services) pathology for blood collection.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policy and procedures of the University and take all reasonable care to ensure your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself and others.

About the successful applicant

(Selection Criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Completion of a tertiary degree in Psychology or related discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training or experience.
  • Experience or training in the assessment of research participants including experience in administering questionnaires and cognitive assessment is desirable.
  • Experience working with older adults and in a health setting is desirable.
  • Knowledge of research protocols, experimental design and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
