The Department of Government Services (DGS) was established on 1 January 2023 to improve everyone's experience of doing business and interacting with the Victorian government.

We bring important day-to-day services together in one department to make things easy and seamless for Victorians and businesses.

About the role
We have an opportunity to join us as Aboriginal Relationships Officer on a fixed-term basis for 18months.

The Aboriginal Relationships Officer sits in the Marguk-bulok koolin-ik (Aboriginal Outreach team) within the Integrity, Identity and Partnerships portfolio at BDM.

The role works to improve awareness of, and access to, BDM services within Victoria's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community through a multi-disciplinary approach that includes direct community outreach, policy development and proactive stakeholder engagement.

A key part of this role will be ensuring access to BDM services through registrations and certificate possession and other relevant BDM commitments and policies, including BDM's engagement strategy and the Strong Identity Strong Spirit program.

The Aboriginal Relationships Officer may also be called upon to provide advice and contribute to co-design initiatives for specific culturally sensitive products and/or services, contributing to self-determination principles and actions as well as overall improvements to BDM's services and practices.

Additionally, the position is designed to take on a leadership role to mentor other team members/graduates.
About you

  • Partnering and cocreation: Identifies and partners with users/stakeholders/ experts to ensure active collaboration in the design process to understand user needs, obtain ideas, insights and input. Work with stakeholders/users to build prototypes and coordinate testing to validate the strategy, program or product. Ensures decisions are made within agreed timeframes
  • Promotes inclusion: Pays attention to words, expression, and body language; Recognises behaviours that promote a culture of inclusion. Hold self and team accountable towards being inclusive to individuals from diverse backgrounds. Takes corrective actions when behaviours displayed do not promote an inclusive workplace
  • Managing people: Communicates role expectations and purpose; recognises deviation from values, performance standards and provides timely and constructive feedback; Understands individual needs to optimise employee engagement
  • Previous experience with community/and or stakeholder engagement is highly desirable.
