Dear Civil Supervisor,

Terrific opportunities rarely come gift wrapped, labelled "Great Opportunity"

So I'm reluctant to describe this job as such. ( otherwise it might rustle up a whole lot of interest, but not necessarily with the right type of applicant)

It's not for everyone.

In my experience, career-wise, the best opportunities often spring from challenging circumstances. Like those times when you've been required/directed to punch above your weight and height. (metaphorically speaking that is- there'll be no actual punching on this gig)

It's difficult to revert to 'the status q after that. You're forever changed, and capable of more.

For the right person, this role could be the deployment of a lifetime.


Hopefully this will be a role/deployment you'll remember (fondly) in your old age, with a sense of accomplishment, and that you've also had a small part in doing some good in the world.

A key role in your professional journey. A road slightly less travelled, and therefore, the one which makes all the difference. This applies whether you're at the beginning or nearing the conclusion of your Civil Supervising days.

So let's cut to the nitty gritty of why it's not for everyone:

  • Firstly, there's a 4 weeks on, and 2 off roster.
  • Remote location. Isolated. A long way from anywhere. You'll need to be able to cope with the heat and humidity of the Tropics / South Pacific island. You'll need to contend with the elements, and the isolation.
  • Because of the remoteness, and transit times, you'll need to be technically proficient. Yo'll also need to know when you're slightly out of your depth
- you're confident enough in yourself to be able to put your hand up and ask for help/clarification /support or guidance,

  • It's essential you're levelheaded, reliable and consistent in your behaviour. Ideally you're the kind of person who can be counted on to always strive to do your best work.
  • Must play well with others The work is in a remote isolated environment. You cannot take your bat and ball and go home ,without significant planning.
