About the team


The Public Guardian can be appointed by a court or tribunal to make health and lifestyle decisions for people who are unable to on their own, or with support.

These include decisions such as where a person might live, their medical and dental treatment, health care, and other services.

It also provides information and support to private and enduring guardians, service providers, and the wider community.

About the role
The Assistant Public Guardian is responsible for leading and managing the Practice and Strategy team. The role delivers strategic projects, educational and resource material, and policies.

These initiatives support the Public Guardian in exercising its legislative roles, including being appointed as a substitute decision-maker, education and engagement with the community on guardianship, and the rights of represented people in relation to the functions of the Public Guardian.

The Assistant Public Guardian ensures that decisions made comply with the legislative framework and are in line with organizational priorities.

About you
As a competent leader, you possess a passion for engaging and educating the community. You are an experienced decision-maker and a proponent of continuous improvement.

You possess the skills to motivate your team and provide clear strategic direction, as well as influence change across teams.

You are adept at building strong working relationships, enhancing collaboration and communicating effectively with leaders, staff, and key stakeholders.

You are capable of driving project and change management strategies that cater to individual, team and organisational requirements and deliverables.

As a dynamic leader, you can provide high-level advice to the Public Guardian and the leadership team.

You support effective policy development and implementation and make recommendations on proposed actions to ensure fully informed decisions are made.

You possess demonstrated knowledge of guardianship practice.

Essential requirements

  • A degree or equivalent experience in social, health, behavioural sciences or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills for the delivery of services in a complex customer environment
  • An ability to solve complex human service problems with limited human and financial resources.
  • An ability to develop strong interagency networks that generate positive outcomes for customers.
  • Available to travel throughout NSW and to undertake oncall responsibilities to provide support and delegated decisionmaking on a rotational basis.
