This opportunity would suit an enthusiastic and agile leader with the ability to manage the activities of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the delivery of services and programs supporting work health and safety across the Construction Services sector in NSW.

Specifically, the strategic regulatory interventions when high risk non-compliant businesses are identified within the industry, education and training initiatives, and stakeholder management with industry unions and associations and other government departments.


  • Managing resources to ensure delivery of exemplar regulatory services and programs that are consistent, professional, customer centric, and evidence informed in line with organisational direction and relevant legislation, policies and procedures
  • Contributing as a part of the Construction Services Group leadership teams to the strategic and operational direction of the business to ensure the activities of the business unit align with organisational objectives and meet the needs of construction workers and businesses customers, asbestos and demolition licence holders and industry stakeholders.
  • Identifying emerging WHS issues and industry trends and initiate action to address identified risks and ensure best practice, innovative interventions and guidance material are delivered
  • Fostering and maintaining professional working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including those across the Better Regulation Division, other State and Territory jurisdictions, industry unions and associations to facilitate desired outcomes and achieve business unit objectives
  • Identifying and managing emerging business issues that may impact the business or on matters presenting reputational, social or other risks to the business, recommending and/or mitigation strategies as required
  • Preparing and/or contributing to, submissions, discussion papers, project proposals and briefings for senior officers, ensuring responses and recommendations are consistent with organisational policies and procedures
  • Managing high profile and contentious work health and safety investigations, incidents, complaints, reviews and/or policy issues relevant to the business area and provide strategic advice/recommendations to the senior officers.
  • Managing financial budgets associated with the efficient running of the team.

  • Ability to promote and influence the implementation of organisational direction and programs to external stakeholders including the relevant deliverables within the SafeWork NSW Building and Construction Sector Plan
  • Demonstrated strong Stakeholder Engagement skills across all levels
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with complex matters, including National and State cross agency jurisdictions and working groups and other relevant key stakeholders
  • Ability to provide strong leadership and direction to an evolving business unit culture within a dynamic and changing operating environment, while ensuring consistency with organisational and public sector values
  • Ability to lead a business unit through innovative use of digital technologies to secure desired strategic outcomes
  • Ability to effectively manage the functions and responsibilities of Inspectors as set out in the Work Health and Safety and Workers Compensation legislation
  • Ability to represent SafeWork NSW through relevant media channels using the approved process when required
  • Travel as required
  • High level oral and written communication skills
  • A strong understanding and qualifications within the Construction industry is preferred

Essential requirements

  • Ability to travel, work remotely and out of usual business hours
  • Hold a NSW 'C' class drivers' licence with a satisfactory safe driving record and a requirement to maintain the safe driving record throughout employment
  • Satisfactory criminal record check
  • Satisfactory medical assessment capacity regarding physical and psychological impacts of the inherent duties of the role
