Position Information:


Sydney Distance Education High School has an enrolment of around 1500 students, including 86 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, with a fulltime equivalent of 142 teachers and 21.8 administrative and support staff.

Committed to excellence and equity in distance education, we are the largest school provider of flexible blended learning programs in NSW, serving students from areas north of Wollongong, south of Newcastle, and west to the Blue Mountains.

Close to the central business district of Sydney, we work on the land of the Traditional Custodians, the Gadigal People of Eora Nation.

A priority of the school is creating an inclusive and positive school community_ _to support students and staff with increased opportunities to build wellbeing, inclusivity and connection to the school.


Students who meet specific enrolment requirements attend our school because they are not able to attend another school on a fulltime basis.

Our students include those with additional learning and support needs, and we also teach students studying single courses which they are not able to access at their home schools.

Students may learn in many ways, using written materials and online technologies.


Engagement with creative, challenging and blended learning opportunities is supplemented by inclusive student wellbeing programs and the school's partnerships with communities, families and other schools.

Selection Criteria:

Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria,


Demonstrated capacity to develop student wellbeing initiatives and implement Departmental policy and procedures to identify and support students with a wide range of wellbeing and learning needs within the context of distance education.


High level organisational skills and demonstrated ability to lead a large wellbeing team in a proactive approach to meeting student needs and managing complexities.


Highly developed capacity to work closely with external agencies, staff, parents/carers and the wider community to support and case manage students with a diverse range of wellbeing needs including at times of crisis.


Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a dynamic member of the executive team, as well as with whole school staff to identify and lead initiatives that address school strategic directions.


General Selection Criteria:

  • Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
  • Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
  • Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
  • Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
  • Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies
