The Tax System Branch is seeking expressions of interest for a role co-managing the Tax Framework Unit (three days a week).

As the successful applicant will jointly lead the team with another part-time Director, the role may particularly suit someone who works part-time (or is interested in doing so).

As well as the part-time hours for the role, other flexible arrangements will be considered. Current EL2s and highly performing EL1s are invited to apply.


The Tax Framework Unit brings a whole-of-system perspective to major policy issues, including focussing on interlinkages between the personal and corporate income tax bases, superannuation, and indirect taxes, and analysing longer-term trends and pressures across the tax system.

The unit works collaboratively across the Department, and especially closely with all teams across Revenue Group (and RAID in Markets Group) by supporting the Group's work, including helping to shape and articulate a tax agenda for the future.

The team also leads streams of work supporting Treasury's engagement on tax matters with international organisations such as the OECD and building relationships with academics and other external stakeholders to harness their valuable perspectives when forming our tax policy advice.


Key skills and experience for the role include:

  • A strong interest in tax policy, including an appreciation of Australia's tax system architecture and policy-making processes.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, including good economic frameworks and research skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, both in managing a high performing team and in contributing strongly to the Division's broader leadership and culture.
  • Excellent people skills, including being a positive team player and developing and nurturing strong networks and working relationships, both internally and externally.
