An excellent opportunity is available for a HREC Chairperson to chair the Human Research Ethics Committee at Australia's pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position


Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) seeking to appoint a new Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) Chair to manage the HREC at WEHI.

The HREC Chair, with the support of Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) staff, will conduct ethical review of the Institute's research involving humans.

The role will be involved in the review of WEHI's human research and management of the HREC. The position will also assist with the development of human research ethics policy and training.

Selection Criteria

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience as a member of a Human Research Ethics Committee, ideally as Chair.
  • A sound understanding human clinical research ethics and governance requirements and demonstrated knowledge of deliberative processes that aim to secure transparent and justified lines of decisionmaking. Experience working in a clinical role is desirable.
  • Familiarity with the (NHMRC) National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and the medical research community.

Personal Qualities:

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work well individually, as well as part of a team.
  • Analytical and numerical skills and a good eye for detail
  • Sound planning and organisation skills and ability to cope well under pressure
Terms of Appointment

This position is available for 3 years in a part time capacity. Salary is dependent on experience. Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
