An exciting opportunity exists to join NALHN as a Clinical Coder within their highly skilled Coding Team.

Clinical Coder

The Clinical Coder as a pivotal member within the Corporate Division, is functionally responsible for the timely allocation of ICD-10-AM codes (or subsequent versions) to inpatient episodes of care to produce accurate and comprehensive morbidity & casemix profile for NALHN situated at Lyell McEwin and Modbury Hospitals as well as the provision of coding and casemix advice to clinicians within the NALHN resulting in accurate recording of clinical & morbidity data.

• This is achieved through:
• Ensuring accurate, timely and detailed abstraction and classification of inpatient episodes of care on to the relevant Hospital database, according to the ICD10AM or subsequent versions and following established State & National guidelines and coding standards.
• Provide support in the assistance to medical and other clinical personnel to ensure the allocation of ICD10AM diagnoses and procedure codes are correct and complete, and can be substantiated by documentation within the medical record.
• Ensuring the maintenance of medical record procedures in relation to the coding unit.
• Accessing pathology via OACIS computer system to ensure accurate coding of inpatient data.
• Demonstrating competence in the knowledge of the ISAAC data collection process, definitions and procedures to a competent level.
• Demonstrating competence in the knowledge of Casemix funding and DRG principles.

Advanced Clinical Coder

The Advanced Clinical Coder as a pivotal member within the Corporate Division, is functionally responsible for more complex and intricate clinical coding, for quality of clinical documentation (noting impacts on APC, DRG and HAC and other quality activities), mentoring less experienced clinical coders and Divisional Clinicians to provide a comprehensive and appropriate primary medical cause/diagnosis and treatment.

• The Advanced Clinical Coder is responsible to the Manager, NALHN Clinical Coding Service for the timely and accurate translation of medical and procedural terminology into International Classification of Diseases (Current Edition) Australian Modification (ICD10AM), for use in statistical analysis, epidemiology, hospital planning, research, and for the auditing of quality patient care.
• Fully experienced and qualified coders contribute significantly to the assignment of Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (AR-DRGs) upon which Activity Based Funding and Casemix for Inpatients is dependent.
• This is achieved through:
• Translating the narrative descriptions of diagnoses and procedures into valid, accurate and complete ICD10AM codes which reflect the complete clinical picture of the patient, reason for admission and treatment administered.
• Performing clinical coding at an advanced level, covering a broad Casemix, using appropriate initiative, judgement and resources, such as the Australian and State Coding Standards, internet, anatomy books, abbreviation books, dictionaries etc., to make coding decisions in abstraction and assignment of codes
