The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) provides diagnostic and research capability required to investigate and respond to newly emerging diseases affecting livestock and other animals.
As an ACDP Animal Welfare Officer, you will provide veterinary advice and specialist expertise in the management of animal welfare relating to CSIRO research.
With your primary focus on ensuring the welfare of animals used in research, you will also be involved in diagnostic work and training animal technicians in medical and surgical techniques.
Building effective relationships across ACDP to ensure the best possible welfare and care of animals in the facility, you will provide leadership in maintaining the standard of animal care and use.
The appointee must be able to meet ACDP microbiological security and security assessment requirements.Your duties will include:
- Provide veterinary advice and support to research staff regarding animal welfare issues.
- Coordinate and conduct regular internal audits and monitor approved research projects to ensure the care and welfare of the animals involved.
- Provide advice for the development of new Standard Operating Procedures and maintain a central register.
- Collaborate and support the development and delivery of relevant training and promote best practice in the care and use of animals in research.
- Provide leadership and strategic advice on current and emerging animal welfare matters.
- Abide by and promote microbiological security regulations at ACDP.

AU$105k - AU$114k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
- A veterinary degree registrable with the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria.
- Experience working with animal ethics committees and dealing with animal welfare issues.
- An in depth understanding of animal research ethics principles and relevant state and national requirements.
- A sound understanding of scientific research methods and the use of these methods in a variety of settings.
- The ability to effectively interpret policies, procedures and guidelines.
- The ability to professionally handle sensitive and confidential information.
- The ability to work effectively in a team environment, collaborate widely and establish effective relationships.
