About the Role:

The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is seeking candidates for various Assistant Director, Legal positions in the Corporate Operations Branch.


The Corporate Operations Branch has revamped its organizational structure to facilitate the delivery of strategic, client-centric, and innovative services to the department.

We offer a spectrum of services encompassing human resources, legal assistance, work health and safety, performance management, audit, and fraud detection.


These roles are part of a newly established unit that includes legal, conduct, and performance functions, overseeing matters such as bullying, harassment, and discrimination.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a proficient team of legal and HR professionals aligned with the department's vision and strategic objectives.

The Legal department is responsible for:

  • Providing specialized advice and guidance on legal matters such as:
  • Employment regulations
  • Administrative law
  • Intellectual property
  • Information accessibility
  • Statutory interpretation
  • Parliamentary regulations
  • Drafting legal documents and instruments.
  • Supervising, managing, and reviewing external legal consultancy services to meet departmental requirements
  • Cultivating and managing key partnerships and strategic alliances
  • Offering training, education, and fostering a secure and inclusive work environment
  • Delivering prompt and professional responses to all legal and conduct-related issues.

To excel in the Assistant Director positions, you must also demonstrate proficiency in leadership, program management, and contribute to the department's strategic goals.


Role Specific Requirements:

The ideal candidate should:

  • obtain and sustain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance
- be admitted, or eligible for admission, as a legal practitioner of the High Court of Australia or a Supreme Court of a State or Territory
- possess, or be eligible to acquire, a restricted government practicing certificate in the ACT.

Under limited/general guidance, carry out responsibilities adhering to the prescribed standards for the Parliamentary Executive Level 1 classification.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Oversee the Legal operations within the department, providing expert advice and guidance on all legal matters to ensure:

  • Adherence to legal protocols and best practices
- prioritization of relevant recommendations from internal and external evaluations
- fostering constructive relationships with all staff members
- emphasis on educational initiatives, training, and supporting a secure and inclusive workspace, and
- addressing all legal and conduct-related matters professionally and promptly.

  • Supervise and nurture a team of legal and HR professionals aligned with the department's goals and strategic priorities.
Ensure compliance with Legal Service Directions and consistency in client advice, including:
