Yancoal Australia is Australia's largest pure play coal producer. It boasts three tier one thermal coal mines in New South Wales together with interests in three other metallurgical and thermal coal mines located in New South Wales and Queensland. Yancoal Australia also manages five other Australian coal mines on behalf of related parties. Yancoal currently employs over 4,000 people across its operations. At Yancoal our people are our most valuable asset and we invest in developing our management and leadership talent throughout our operations. Our Ashton Coal Operations include an underground mine and coal handling and preparation plant, located in Camberwell. The site operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Job Tasks and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Production Manager, the successful applicant will be responsible for and required to:

  • Provide visible and proactive safety leadership
  • Allocate deputies to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and regulations
  • Ensure compliance with all management plans and systems by conducting thorough audits
  • Respond to Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) appropriately and in a timely manner
  • Prioritise resources on shift to achieve the daily and weekly plan
  • Ensure all work is complete to a high standard and compliance with the standards established across the various areas of the mine
  • Conduct start of shift and debriefing meetings with deputies, crew leaders and control room operators
  • Conduct start of shift meetings with crews
  • Complete detailed and accurate shift reports
  • Review and sign off on all statutory reports and deputy production reports for your shift
  • Mentor and coach direct reports with a continuous improvement mindset

Skills and Experience

To be successful in securing this role, you must demonstrate:

  • Minimum 7 years' experience in Underground Longwall Mining
  • NSW 2nd Class (Undermanagers) Certificate of Competency (essential)
  • Diploma in Underground Coal Mine Management (Undermanager) (essential)
  • Significant people leadership experience in a similar role
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to effectively influence and negotiate
  • Demonstrated ability to meet production targets
  • Strong safety culture with demonstrated ability to promote a positive safety culture amongst direct reports
  • High level of planning, organisation and problem solving skills
