Immigration Compliance | Character, Cancellation & Case Resolution | Immigration Compliance Governance | Data and Reporting

The Immigration Compliance Data and Reporting section is responsible for delivering regular reporting products (e.g. program dashboards, data for senate estimate briefs) and responding to ad hoc data and reporting requests (e.g. data to respond to media enquiries or freedom of information requests) in relation to the responsibilities of Immigration Compliance Group. The Section provides data and reporting to support a range of stakeholders, including Ministers, senior executives, policy areas, external scrutiny bodies.

Our teams work with detailed and complex data from a number of departmental administrative systems, including on Migration and Temporary visas, cancellations, and case management. Our teams needs problem solvers with strong conceptual and analytical skills, who think critically, and undertake research around issues to identify innovative solutions. Candidates have or can quickly acquire knowledge of the relevant departmental systems and data sources that are essential to the role. Applicants will have a demonstrated ability to learn quickly and develop links across the Department and portfolio to deliver positive outcomes.

Our data and reporting staff often work independently on individual tasks, while also drawing together to achieve a common goal of delivery scheduled and ad hoc reporting. Applicants will have a strong work ethic and be skilled at working both within a team and independently, under limited (depending on level and capability) supervision, and see work through to completion.

Good communicators

Applicants will have the ability to connect to a broad range of audiences and build and maintain strong networks and relationships. They will be adept at working with operational, program and policy areas and at communicating complex data issues in lay terms where needed.

An eye for detail and quality of work outputs

The ideal candidate has a keen eye for detail and works to ensure the quality of their data and reporting outputs, whether working to schedule or responding to urgent requests.

Ability to work under pressure

The ideal candidate will be flexible and able to take on new challenges and work as required by the agency. Be ready to work smart, be innovative and able to manage competing priorities when working under pressure, communicating with their supervisor to resolve competing priorities where needed.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Deliver regular reporting products on schedule and to high quality, support the delivery of customised data, and be prepared to respond under pressure for ad-hoc reporting often in times of crisis response
  • Look for improved practices practice to identify efficiencies and develop and implement new ways of operating
  • Contribute to the research, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data, helping to turn data into a coherent narrative to support key stakeholders
  • Liaise with stakeholders to identify requirements and develop strong and productive working relationships
  • Document processes as needed and support good record-keeping and knowledge retention practices where required
  • Identify, develop and deliver reporting products to professionalise delivery and to enable consistent understanding and practice
  • Support the Assistant Director of the Data and Reporting team in building and developing the team and its capabilities
  • Work closely with other team members.

Additional information

Mandatory Qualifications/Experience:

  • Experience in data analysis and reporting using multiple, complex administrative datasets (or equivalent)
  • Experience in preparing reporting to assist in the delivery of program management and operational outcomes

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

  • Tertiary degree in a STEM field of study, or equivalent demonstrated work experience
  • Extensive experience in statistical analysis using Microsoft Excel
  • Experience using SQL, R, or other related coding languages
  • Data reporting and visualisation skills, including PowerBI

The role is available in Canberra, Parramatta, Melbourne or Perth.
