An exciting opportunity exists for a Research Radiochemist to join SAHMRI, supporting the Molecular Imaging and Therapy Research Unit (MITRU).

This position will engage in the research and development (R&D) aspects of radioisotope production (via the cyclotron solid and liquid targets) and manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals.

Reporting to the Head of Research and Development, MITRU, the Research Radiochemist is responsible for carrying out all tasks required for the completion of the project in a timely manner.

The position will involve engaging in the appropriate management of intellectual property and confirm that the related documentation adheres to cGMP standards.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manufacture of radiohalogen and radiometal isotopes and associated radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Development of new radiopharmaceutical production and quality control methods.
  • Assist in preparation of documents and provide scientific input on related MITRU R&D projects.
  • Develop appropriate stability trials for new IMP radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Assist the Head of R&D, Senior Radiochemists, and QA manager in compiling data and information required for Product Quality Reviews (PQRs).
  • Act as scientific Subject Matter Expert (SME) on R&D projects.
  • Ensure good working order of equipment and that calibration and maintenance schedules are followed.
  • Maintain accurate records of tests/experiments performed in the MITRU and provide outcomes of the results to the Head of R&D.
  • Ensure adherence to the Radiation Protection and Control Act, the Radiation and Control (Ionising Radiation) Regulations, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and other related legislation and guidelines.
About You

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work with mínimal supervision.
  • Previous experience of radiopharmaceutical research and/or manufacturing is desirable but not essential as training will be given.
  • Experience and knowledge in the use of standard laboratory equipment including liquid, gas and thinlayer chromatography systems.
  • Practical synthetic chemistry skills and techniques with advanced knowledge in synthetic and analytical chemistry.
  • Knowledge of the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA), the Radiation Protection and Control Act and the Radiation and Control (Ionising Radiation) Regulations (2000), or has the ability quickly acquire this knowledge.
  • Knowledge of chemical/radioactive waste management measures.
  • Welldeveloped analytical and problemsolving skills
Special Requirements

  • Some out of hours work may be required.
  • Successful individuals will be expected to attain a SA Government EPA license for handling radioactivity in a timely manner. MITRU will provide learning and support to achieve this goal.
  • This position required a preemployment medical examination to determine suitability for the physical requirements of the role.
