Overview


The Deputy Head of Policy, Communications and Strategy assists the Head of Policy, Communications and Strategy with the day-today delivery of VALS' policy and advocacy work.

This includes management of the team, strategic planning, providing support to the CEO, and representing and advocating for VALS priorities on relevant working groups and forums

Key Performance Indicators, Duties & Responsibility

  • Contribute to the core work of the Policy, Communications and Strategy team. This includes research and policy development, government and stakeholder engagement, communications and media activities, and supporting all teams across VALS
  • Work closely with the Head of Policy, Communications and Strategy to oversee and manage the strategy and daytoday operation of the team and independently work on tasks relevant to the team's work as delegated by the Head of Policy, Communications and Strategy.
  • Manage and develop staff, contractors and volunteers.
  • Contribute to planning and management of the Policy, Communications and Strategy team budget
  • Design and implement planning documents
  • Provide strong stakeholder engagement and management support
  • As directed, undertake other duties which are incidental and peripheral to the main tasks, provided that such duties are reasonably within the employee's skills, competence and training.

Key Selection Criteria
Relevant qualifications such as a Bachelor or Masters degree in Politics, Law, Communications, Journalism or Business Management and/or extensive experience in developing and managing external facing policy and advocacy teams

Strong leadership and management skills, including people management skills

4 years+ experience in policy, advocacy, or social campaign roles - particularly working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities

Strong organisational, time management and planning skills; with an ability to work autonomously and within a team

High proficiency in Microsoft Office and media monitoring tools


Ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and acknowledge their diverse backgrounds, personalities and varying needs and the unique cultural ways in which they may be expressed.

Experience working in the non-profit sector.
