About the Role


The Head of Public Affairs and Advocacy oversees a team that provides strategic and advocacy advice and support to Minderoo and Tattarang on government and community engagement to maximise impact.

Working with Minderoo initiative directors, Tattarang businesses and key internal and external stakeholders, the role is responsible for the design, development and implementation of policy asks and advocacy plans for:

  • Proactive government engagement at the federal level and as required at the local and state level; and
- proactive community engagement with relevant communities.


This role has at least one direct report, with scope for growth, and will work closely with and provide guidance and leadership to the wider External Affairs and Communication team.


Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Having regard to and indepth understanding of the programs, projects, collaborations and relationships that key internal stakeholders have with external partners.
  • Working with key internal stakeholders to:
  • synthesise research, identify key findings and government interest;
- navigate the path from idea to policy to advocacy with impact;
- develop clear cut-through messages for each advocacy strategy;
- build influence and trust with government at the relevant level; and
- develop respectful and sensitive community engagement strategies.

  • Engage and build relationships with government departments, members of parliament (including advisers and other staff) and local communities to build a coalition of support.
  • In collaboration with key internal stakeholders, develop and write key documents and plans.
  • Work closely with Head of Communications (Minderoo) and the Head of Communications (Tattarang).
  • Keep abreast of and inform key internal stakeholders about:
  • Government and opposition policy announcements;
  • Details of and information about ministers, shadow ministers, chairs and members of committees, chiefs of staff, advisers; and
  • Government and departmental inquiries, reviews, research, consultation and other activities.
  • Work with and support key internal stakeholders by:
  • Coordinating and assisting with the preparation of submissions to government and departmental inquiries, consultations, reviews and other activities;
  • Preparing key internal stakeholders for appearances at relevant events;
  • Assisting with arrangements for events or visits by key Tattarang and Minderoo leaders; and
  • Delivering regular training to assist key internal stakeholders.
  • Drive and support the recruitment of future team appointments;
  • Provide direction and guidance to direct reports; and
Provide oversight on the performance of direct reports, empowered to take corrective action where required to ensure successful outcomes.

Qualifications:

About You

  • Tertiary degree in Politics, Communications, Law or related fields.
  • Experience in similar roles including roles with leadership and management responsibilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills including personal skills and manner, experience managing sensitive stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage changing scope across a range of industries and locations, with a diverse team.
  • Highly organised and autonomous work habits.


Our preference is for this role to be Perth based, with regular interstate travel, however we encourage applicants from all locations to apply.
