About Pathology Queensland

Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional and remote Queensland, offering laboratory services in the disciplines of: anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology and genomics.

PQ also provides an invaluable service to Queenslanders by supporting a coordinated response to incidents and disasters.

Pathology Queensland:

- has laboratories located within 35 Queensland Health hospital facilities, providing 24/7 service every day of the year
- employs approximately 2000 staff including specialist pathologists, registrars, scientists, technicians, laboratory assistants, and operational and support staff, across Queensland
- supports more than 450 point-of-care testing devices, extending access to pathology results in remote locations and after hours with testing at the patient's bedside
- is involved with 70 per cent of all medical decisions and in all cancer diagnoses
- is critical to the delivery of positive patient outcomes and plays a key role in delivering on Queensland Health's commitment to achieve good health and well-being for all Queenslanders
- works alongside clinicians to better understand diseases, enable earlier diagnosis, inform treatment options and monitor disease progression
- provides specialised testing services for samples referred from public and private pathology providers within Queensland and from interstate.

What we are looking for:

  • Demonstrated ability or the ability to rapidly learn pathology preanalytical processes, e.g., preparation of blood films, ESR analysis, preparation of films and staining of malaria and Kleihauer samples, loading samples onto analysers, aliquoting, storage, retrieval of specimens and GeneXpert PCR testing for Influenza and COVID.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use computerised systems, basic keyboarding skills particularly for data entry.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, manage time effectively with competing priorities with strong attention to detail and ability to focus in a busy, complex environment.
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal and communication skills including an ability to develop collaborative working relationships to effectively communicate and to contribute positively to a team environment.
  • Highly developed customer focus with experience dealing with a variety of people and a high level of awareness of impact of the individual on the overall customer experience.

Mandatory qualifications and other requirements:

  • There are no mandatory qualifications required for this role. While not mandaory, a Certificate III Pathology (or similar) qualification would be well regarded.
  • The Central Core Laboratory delivers a 24hour, 7day service. In this workplace, all newly appointed Core Laboratory staff are contracted to work any rostered shift within the 24hour 7day roster period, including overtime as required. This facilitates the progressive review of staffing and shift arrangements in the Core Laboratory to accommodate changes in workload and service requirements.
  • You will be expected to participate in the Core Haematology shift roster and will work a combination of day and afternoon shifts within each fortnight. There may be an expectation in the future for the incumbent to work continuous shifts including a combination of day, evening and overnight shifts within each fortnight, within the Core Laboratory.
  • It is a condition of employment for this role, for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against COVID19 as per the Queensland Health Human Resources Policy B70.
  • It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment (Health Employment Directive No. 01/16): measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), varicella (chicken pox),pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, tuberculosis.
