The Role
Reporting to the Features, Investigations and Data Editor within the SBS News digital team, this role will see you:

  • Pitching, researching, commissioning and editing quick turnaround, news adjacent digital features from journalists that are among the most-read stories on SBS News platforms.
  • Producing explainers, backgrounders and human interest stories on core SBS topics that deliver on the SBS Charter.
  • Deputising for the Features, Investigations and Data Editor to provide management, leadership and administration support, and working closely with the News Editor.
  • Some feature writing may be required.

About you

  • An experienced journalist/editor with a strong eye for detail and the angles that matter to our audiences.
  • Jump at the chance to explain what's going on in Australia and the world for a diverse Australianbased audience, and know who and what makes a great 'SBS story'
  • Demonstrated experience writing and/or editing original print and/or digital stories for national or international news titles.
  • A strong understanding of the Australian media landscape and a keen interest in national and international news with an awareness of what matters to audiences in Australia.
  • Awareness of digital storytelling and how audiences consume news and features online, on social media, on thirdparty platforms and on mobile.
  • An understanding of media law, as well as the importance of balance and impartiality in reporting, plus a commitment to maintaining our editorial integrity and high standards of accuracy.

Where possible, ideas should:

  • Be hooked to something current or upcoming in the news cycle and/or be a key/future talking point among people in Australia
  • Reflect the SBS Charter.
Each pitch should contain a suggested headline and a short proposal
no longer than 200 words.

Please note this role can be based at SBS in Sydney or Melbourne with 2 days a week working from home.
