Position Overview:
AUSLAN Mentor


As a Mentor, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals to navigate academic challenges and achieve success under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), with proficiency in Australian Sign Language (Auslan).

Your role will involve providing tailored guidance and fostering a positive learning experience for our participants.

Responsibilities:

Personalised Support: Customise mentoring sessions to address the specific academic needs and goals of participants under the NDIS, utilising Auslan as needed.

Goal Setting and Progress Monitoring: Collaborate with participants to set realistic goals aligned with their NDIS plans, ensuring effective communication through Auslan.

Inclusive Learning Environment: Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment, leveraging Auslan to facilitate accessibility and understanding.

Collaboration with Support Network: Work closely with families, caregivers, and other support networks to ensure a holistic approach to participants' development, facilitating effective communication in Auslan.

Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of mentoring activities, including participant progress and achievements, with proficiency in documenting Auslan interactions.

Requirements:

  • AUSLAN proficiency.
  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent educational attainment.
  • Ideally possess a Certificate III and IV in Disability Support or relevant qualifications showcasing proficiency in supporting individuals with disabilities, including proficiency in Auslan.
  • NDIS checks.
  • A valid and uptodate Working with Children Check (WWCC) is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in mentoring or working with individuals, especially those with disabilities, utilizing Auslan as a communication tool.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including proficiency in Auslan.
  • High level of empathy and patience.
  • Commitment to inclusivity and understanding the unique needs of mentees, particularly those who rely on Auslan for communication.
  • Adherence to organisational policies and procedures, including confidentiality agreements and codes of conduct.
  • Genuine passion for mentoring and making a positive impact on the lives of individuals with disabilities, using Auslan to bridge communication gaps.
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other team members, employing Auslan as a means of effective communication.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in responding to the evolving needs of participants and the organization, ensuring accessibility through Auslan.
  • Effective communication with parents, guardians, and other relevant stakeholders, utilizing Auslan to facilitate understanding and engagement.
  • Cultural competence and an understanding of diversity, including the needs of individuals who use Auslan.
  • Prioritisation of the safety and wellbeing of participants, ensuring a secure and supportive environment, with proficiency in Auslan for emergency and everyday interactions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and uptodate records of mentorship activities and progress, including Auslan interactions.
  • Adherence to professional boundaries, recognising the importance of maintaining a mentormentee relationship within established guidelines, with respect to the use of Auslan.
