We are seeking an experienced Principal Solicitor to join our diverse team in Kununurra, collaborating closely with our Chief Executive Officer in overseeing our operations in East Kimberley. Who is Kimberley Community Legal Services?

We are an independent, not-for-profit community legal service, a prominent remote civil law practice in Australia that predominantly serves aboriginal communities. Offering legal, social work, and financial counseling services, we extend a free service to vulnerable community members facing hardships. With offices in Kununurra and Broome, we regularly reach out to urban and remote areas in the scenic Kimberley region.

THE ROLE:

Reporting to: Chief Executive Officer

Hours: 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday

No two days are alike in this role, but a typical day may involve:

  • Coordinating the dissemination of legal information, advice, assistance, casework, and representation for clients across the Kimberley region.
  • Supervising East Kimberley legal staff, including performance evaluations, professional development planning and implementation, and offering management support to the wider team.
  • Oversight and review of all casework.
  • Coordinating the engagement of our solicitors in community legal education, delivering training and assistance to staff in providing legal information.
  • Engaging with community networks and establishing/maintaining relationships with referring agencies, key organizations, community leaders, and local individuals relevant to legal matters.
  • Developing and executing outreach programs and services within a community development framework, including fostering connections and relationships with financial services and social work teams.
  • Identifying and cultivating opportunities to enhance the quality, efficacy, and efficiency of legal services and community legal education, as well as formulating a service delivery strategy.
  • Collaborating as part of the leadership team.
  • Pursuing professional development activities to uphold and enhance your knowledge and skills.

We are seeking an individual who meets most of the following criteria:

  • Eligibility for an unrestricted practicing certificate in Western Australia and extensive post admission experience.
  • Strong casework and advocacy experience in generalist law areas, particularly in family and/or civil law.
  • Experience in a community legal practice environment and/or within a community-based organization in remote and rural Australia.
  • Proven ability in coordinating legal services and programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising other solicitors and in managing and enhancing staff performance.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to apply these skills across a diverse range of individuals, groups, and organizations.
  • Commitment to principles of social justice and to effectively collaborating with Indigenous communities.
  • Experience in advising and representing individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds, and in developing and delivering community education programs.
  • Resilience, adaptability, and the capability to tackle the challenges of remote service delivery.
  • Valid driver's license applicable in WA.
  • Completed or willingness to undergo a Legal Practice Management Course relevant to either the Private or NFP sector.
  • Experience in Legal Practice Management.

Successful candidates will need to furnish references, a recent WA Police Clearance, current Working with Children's Check, and documentation supporting their work rights in Australia.
