Emergency Registrar

This presents an opportunity for an ACEM trainee in TS2 or 3 to finalize an accredited 6-month term in the NHW ED as part of the ACEM blended supervision program. The trainee will have a local supervisor at NHW and a DEMT based at Western Health.

Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) serves as the primary health provider in the Central Hume region. Following a significant redevelopment, which includes the construction of a new emergency department, ICU, and the enlargement of medical and pediatric units.

NHW is a flourishing regional service with 255 beds and is the main referral facility for a substantial part of Northeast Victoria. The Emergency Department handles a growing number of cases, averaging more than 30,000 per year and increasing. It sees a diverse range of cases including trauma, with about 25% of them involving pediatrics.

The Emergency Department is complemented by a wide array of inpatient specialties such as Internal Medicine, Critical Care Unit (incorporating ICU, HDU, and CCU beds), General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Urology, Anesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Geriatrics/Rehabilitation, Medical Oncology, and Mental Health services.

The service actively contributes to medical education for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, as well as to nursing and allied health education. Onsite, the University of Melbourne's rural clinical school, a popular facility, houses an array of educational amenities including a simulation lab and skills center.

Our Senior Medical Staff consists of FACEMS, FACRRMS, FRACGP, all of whom have completed ACEM's EMC, EMD, or EMAD programs.

The Role

• The Emergency Registrar will be tasked with evaluating and treating patients with the guidance of senior medical staff. Additionally, they will participate in supervising and educating interns, HMOs, and medical students.
• The registrar will regularly handle trauma cases and critically ill patients in our resuscitation area.
• NHW hosts a local emergency education program weekly. Trainees can also opt to participate in training at other locations.
• Support is provided for those interested in obtaining formal credentials in bedside ultrasound through either CCPU or ACEM paths in AAA, FELS, and EFAST.
